I cast a worried glance at the straps holding it to the back of the truck. They have started fraying at the edges.
A sense of impatience exudes from the air holes that pepper the sides of the box. Time is short and daylight will arrive soon.
I hit the roof of the cab with my fist. This is far enough into the wilderness.
The red dust from the track envelopes us as we come to a sudden and relieving stop. Everyone gets out of the cab and joins me on the back of the truck. I reach tentatively over the top of the box and release the door lever.
Nothing happens.
The tension in the air is so great that it feels like I am trying to breath under water. In the silence, we hear nothing. Even the insects are holding their breath in anticipation.
On the edge of my senses, I can hear a scratching noise. It senses that freedom is before it and lunges into the night
